As many of you know, and is noted on this website, Joe owned and loved a beautiful 1971 Alfa Romeo. This story is about his beloved car. It is paraphrased, and I might get the location wrong, but it is true in spirit.
One morning, Joe was driving to work in NYC in his 1971 Alfa Romeo. Apparently, Alfa's (at least back in the day) had a reputation of being a smidge unreliable on the road. This particular morning sheets of rain were teaming as Joe was driving over the 59th Street Bridge. All of a sudden, the Alfa died! Joe tried to get the car to turn over several times with no luck.
You can imagine the anxiety of being in a disabled car in the middle of rush hour on a bridge in NYC! A man driving in back of Joe stopped, got out of his car, and jogged over to Joe. Joe, feeling a sense of relief and gratitude rolled down his window. The man leaned in and said to Joe, "I'm an Alfa mechanic."
Joe could not believe his good fortune! The cavalry arrived! The man continued, "You're never going to get that car started in the rain." Then he turned, jogged back to his car, and drove away leaving Joe stunned.
I do not exactly know how Joe got out of this pickle, but I imagine it involved a call to AAA for a tow followed by a very delayed arrival at work!
